We are a fast-paced culture that values instantaneous information and quick action. It doesn’t matter that you’ve got a lot of work to do, if you have a deadline or an urgent meeting, we’re all waiting for you.
This is another one of those things. When it comes down to it, most of us are very busy. We tend to have “urgent meetings” and “deadlines” that we work around and sometimes forget. When it comes to business, it’s important to never let that happen. Business is about people, and people are busy. If you have a deadline, you should forget about it.
Another thing we found interesting is that the concept of the deadline is an issue in the game. You have to complete one task before moving on to the next. When it comes to business people forget deadlines. They focus on meeting milestones, but in business a deadline is just a number, and just like a number, it can easily be missed.
One way to ensure that you make progress on your goals is to keep notes, either electronically or on paper. Keeping your tasks in a notebook or list is a quick way to keep track of your progress, and it also helps you keep track of how long it takes you to complete each task. It’s a good idea to write down or make a list of all the tasks you need to complete before you can move on to the next one.
The more you write down, the more you realize that you’ll need to make the next one more difficult. Don’t worry, the process is almost automatic. It just takes a bit of discipline to actually get through the process.
I think the point is, don’t be too hard on yourself when you start to procrastinate. When you put something off you’re essentially saying, “I don’t want to do this”. The more you sit around and put off things, the more you become a victim of your own success.
Ok, so I want to put on a little bit of self-awareness here. This is the first time Ive said this in a while. But Ive been procrastinating for two or three weeks now. Ive been working on other things and just not even feeling it. Ive got a lot of stuff going on. Ive got a lot of different ideas in my head. Ive got a lot of stuff going on that I need to work on.
I think the best way to make sure you don’t procrastinate is to actually start doing it. I was talking with a friend today about procrastinating and he said, “you don’t start a project until you are done with it, so go ahead and put it off as long as you can until you are finished.
Yes, put off work, work as necessary until completion. But you can put off procrastination, too. You can put off procrastination by setting a timer, setting a deadline, or even making a promise, and then sticking to it. The point is to put off work as long as you can, but you don’t have to. We need to work, we need to put our energy into it.
I’ll admit, I procrastinated on this one. I knew I had to do it, but I had just been so busy with work and life that I had forgotten about it. There was no telling how much time had passed when I set another deadline (on September 22nd) and did it. You can do it too.
