Most people are like a ship that has lost all of its sails.
That’s an interesting statement. We’ve had that one for a while, but I’m sure we’ll hear it often. I think it’s an apt description of the way people behave in business. People are “business” people. They may not be able to work outside their home or their office, but they do have to be able to think and act outside of the confines of what they know.
In business, you can’t just go off and do whatever you want. You have to be able to be ethical with what you ask of your customers. It’s a difficult balance to strike. A lot of people (like us) will try to do what they think a customer would want to hear, but that doesn’t always work. So if you have a customer who is going to act unethically, you may have to give them what they want.
Most of the time, ethical behavior comes from being aware of your own ethical code, but it’s a bit trickier when you’re dealing with a team of people who are all under the same roof and you’re not sure what they are thinking. If you’re constantly monitoring every communication to make sure a customer is being ethical, you’ll find that it’s incredibly difficult to be honest with them.
Not to mention that the more you work with other people, the more you learn about their values and morals. Business ethics, in this context, means to be honest, fair, and consistent with your values.
We can use the same principle for any other business, but the business ethics of your employees is going to be one of the most important ones. Especially when youre dealing with teams of people who are all under the same roof. You don’t have to be good at the communication. You just have to know what your code of conduct is.
The more employees you have, the more you must learn about them. You also have to learn what they expect of themselves and what it is you expect of them. I can tell you this from experience, as I have been both the manager of a small business and a team of employees. My employees expect me to be honest, and they expect me to be consistent with my values.
The most important thing you can do, is to be consistent. Whether you are working for yourself or for someone else, your values should be consistent. If you don’t treat your employees the way you would want them to treat you, then you are not going to be effective.
Business ethics were created in order to help society run as efficiently, effectively, and without waste as possible. This is why it is not uncommon for businesses to try to put a value on things that aren’t necessarily monetary. If you are an employee there is a chance your boss might consider your actions to be unethical. That doesn’t mean he or she should or can do anything about it. It just means that you should expect the same courtesy and respect you would show to an employer.
One way for businesses to put a value on things that arent necessarily monetary is to put a value on human lives. In the case of Deathloop, they put a value on the people who come to their Island to kill them. That value is to be taken seriously. We do not want to see anyone get killed. The same goes for the people who are getting paid to do the work of the people who are getting paid to kill them.
